Our Favorite Ski Resorts in Switzerland
In the past few years, we got to explore the top ski resorts in Valais/Wallis, which we'd say is the best Swiss canton for skiing in Switzerland. Bold claim, we know, but we loved it all. High-altitude resorts, hundreds of kilometers of slopes, guaranteed snow, glacier skiing, stunning scenery, and iconic spots like Zermatt and Verbier - it's got it all. And here you'll find everything you need to know about skiing in Switzerland.
Zermatt-Cervinia
Saas-Fee
4 Vallees
Starting our skiing adventure in Switzerland at the legendary Zermatt, home to the Matterhorn, perfect snow, and 360 kilometers of slopes, was the best decision ever. Our first visit to Zermatt - Cervinia ski resort (including a thorough exploration of the Italian side) was simply beyond words. Like skiing a 10-kilometer run from Klein Matterhorn at 3,800 meters above sea level all the way down to Zermatt at 1,600 meters - it was probably one of the most epic adventures we had in this part of the Swiss Alps. And that was just the start of it all.
For us, skiing in Saas-Fee was an absolute dream! The car-free Saas-Fee Ski Resort, surrounded by 18 four-thousand-meter peaks, boasts about 100 kilometers of slopes. We loved tackling its fairly challenging (mostly red) runs and skiing on a glacier at 3500m on the northern slopes of the majestic Allalinhorn. And the views of Saas Valley from the Mittelallalin summit station? Simply breathtaking. For more slopes, you can find an additional 50 kilometers in nearby Saas-Almagell and Saas-Grund.
With over 100 kilometers of groomed slopes and the breathtaking Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps, Aletsch Arena was another dream come true for our skier hearts. We loved the slopes between Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn for their great mix of wide blue and red runs, and the summit stations were perfect for glacier views. All in all, we had a great time skiing in Aletsch Arena and couldn't wait to come back the next year (which we did!).
Crans-Montana, with its 140 kilometers of slopes, was the first ski resort we checked out in the French-speaking part of Valais. The weather was perfect, the views were beyond spectacular, and we had an absolute blast the entire time. Highlights of our skiing trip to Crans-Montana were taking the cable car to Plaine Morte, seeing the glacier at 3000m, and skiing back down the Kandahar run to Violettes. Truly unforgettable!
4 Vallees is one of Valais’s crown jewels, with the upscale Verbier as the most famous starting point. With 410 kilometers of slopes, 4 Vallees has something for everyone, from beginner-friendly blue runs to challenging red pistes to ungroomed off-piste skiing for the experts. We loved every second of our skiing adventure in 4 Vallees - fantastic slopes like l'Ours and the breathtaking scenery while skiing between the valleys made it an unforgettable experience! The cable car ride to the summit of 3300m tall Mont Fort, with spectacular views of the Alps and Mont Blanc taking center stage, was just icing on the cake.
